University construction today: More space for students, reduced use of resources
Building measures are a reflection of the increasing popularity of the University of Applied Sciences in the Brandenburg capital Potsdam. For example, the university has added a EUR 12 million, 4,900 m2 extension to its laboratory and workshop building. The windows and part of the facade for the new building were fitted with special glazing from arcon that offers both heat insulation and solar control functions, while the screen-printed decoration provides a design feature.
Around 3,400 students are enrolled at the University of Applied Sciences, which was founded in Potsdam in 1991. It offers a range of courses in engineering, sociocultural and creative disciplines, almost all of which have limited admission criteria and are completely full. The “Annex 1” extension building offers even more space. It was designed by Berlin architects Becher + Rottkamp with a view to sustainability. Its centrepiece is an integrative and holistic energy concept, in which new technologies are used efficiently to save resources.
Special glazing from Arnold Glas
One element that helps save resources is the special glazing from Feuchtwangen-based glass processor arcon, the technology brand of the Arnold Glas Group. With a g-value of 27 percent, the glazing used for windows and facade cladding offers solar and heat protection functions to underpin the ecological concept for the building. The solar control glass sunbelt scandic 53/25, which has a g-value of 27 percent, offers protection from hot rooms on sunny days while enabling a high light transmission of 53 percent. Power-hungry air conditioning units are therefore not necessary in summer. In winter, thanks to a Ug-value of 1.0 W/m²K, heating energy only has to be used sparingly, as the special arcon glass stops heat from escaping.
The glass on the ventilated curtain wall facade was also printed with an irregular bright pattern that gives the building a distinctive look. The printed glazing evokes walls painted with a colour wash technique. “The impression of depth was very important for the architect here,” explains Albert Schweitzer, Plant Manager at arcon. This is why the glass was subsequently coated on the back with the product sunlite CR 2, a coating that acts like a mirror and enhances the impression of depth. The insulating glass was produced in Potsdam by Hoffmann Glas in Halle/Peißen and then coated by arcon.
