ISOLAR NEUTRALUX® advance

  • Behind heat insulating glass, research is being conducted on environmental impacts on human beings

    :envihab is a new kind of medical research centre at the Institute for Aerospace Medicine at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) in Cologne-Porz. It is conducting research into the effects of various environmental conditions on people and exploring possible countermeasures. This research expertise at the highest international level was also to be reflected in the architecture of the building. The result was a modular “house-within-a-house” on around 3,500 m2. The facade consists of 1,000 m2 of Neutralux heat insulating glass from Hunsrück glass producer Wagener.

  • As a large part of the building is underground, the special glazing plays an important role in supplying the rooms with daylight in the form of skylights, roof glazing, light wells and/or glazed courtyards. Crash-resistant, ultra-transparent glass ensures that as many of the sun’s rays as possible get into the building but that no-one moving around outdoors in the vicinity of the lower level research centre can fall into the building. Long, tall glass facade elements separate the building from the bright inner courtyards. The Neutralux heat insulating glass is fixed only at the top and bottom ends, so the structure does not impede light penetration.

    Apart from acquiring scientific insights, the centre develops innovative products in collaboration with partners from the scientific and business communities. This is why the architecture of the research centre is intended to confidently draw attention to the wealth of scientific expertise inside. The special Neutralux glass from Hunsrück glass producer Wagener helps achieve this. As facade elements, the special glazing performs several functions in respect of fall protection, room climate and environmental protection.

    The glass used (Neutralux advance) is one of the most effective forms of triple glazing worldwide and offers a Ug-value of 0.6 W/m2K. This excellent value is attributable to a highly thermally insulating, ultra-thin stainless steel coating and an inert gas fill in the gap between the panes. The coating also ensures that a large part of the solar radiation enters the building, helping to provide a free heating source in winter with no CO2 emissions.
